To make this Banjo you will need a piece of hard wood approximately 2" X 2"X 24" for the neck. I prefer to use hard maple but walnut would also work fine. You will also need about two board feet of one inch thick wood for the built up rim. I like to use Cherry, maple, walnut , Purple heart or any combination that looks good together. This is one of the best looking banjos I built to date. The rim is purple heart and the neck is dyed to match the rim.
The tension hoop is made out of 1/2" X 3/16" brass bent into an 9" hoop.
The tone ring is nothing more than a piece of 3/8 round steal stock available at most hardware stores. It needs to be bent in to an 8" hoop. I have also used 3/8" copper tubing but it seems to produce a slightly softer tone.
You will also need a piece of flat brass for the tail piece. It should be about 1 3/4" wide, 5" long and .1 to .125 inches thick. A small thin piece of brass about 1/2" X 2.5" X 1/16 is needed to hold the tail piece from moving.I use two inch long 6-32 machine screws to tighten the tension ring. You will need about eighteen of this depending on the spacing you use.
The tuners, head, fret wire, and string can be purchased from any good music supply store. The head I use is an 8" Ludwig Tambourine head. This head has the correct amount of crown for the tone ring and the stretcher band. The tuners I use are for a Guitar but work great for this type of banjo.
